8 years ago we saw some interesting things happen in China. Many people say that co-creating only works for software and digital issues, but in Chun Chang (a small city in China with 32 million people) the motorcycle factories are doing just that. 8 years ago the Japanese were the ones dominating the low end motorcycle market even in China. A local company decided they wanted it different, so they took the dominant Japanese motorcycles pulled them apart and found out what key elements made a good motorcycle. The management knew that they had limited talent so they put together a rough sketch of how they wanted the motorcycle to be and then they recruited networks of specialists and users and told them we’re going to rely on you guys coming together and working it all out. The teams competed intensely on who could create the best ideas, thought and solutions. The management evaluated what the teams came up with and then selected what to start producing. In five years they were able to drive down the cost of low end motorcycle from $700 to $200. Emerging markets are not only about low wages a driving force here is also management innovation.
BTW: In India TATA are now creating customizable cars that will be delivered in self assembly packages that any mechanic can put together and modify to suit what the customer wants.
